Darci Lynn
The following is from "A Mighty Girl," which I subscribe to...
Congratulations to 12-year-old Mighty Girl Darci Lynne Farmer who was crowned the champion of America's Got Talent yesterday for her incredible ventriloquism and singing skills! Many fans who have watched the young Oklahoman advance through the competition would be amazed to learn that, until just a few years ago, Darci was so shy that she wouldn’t sing for her own father. But two years ago, she decided that she wanted to be a ventriloquist and asked her parents to buy her a puppet. Initially, her parents balked at the idea; “actually, her dad and I discouraged the puppet for a long time,” says Darci’s mother, Misty Farmer. Eventually, she showed them just how committed she was to learning ventriloquism: “It was her persistence,” her father Clarke Farmer added. “That's what told us how passionate she was about it."
The Farmers bought Darci a puppet for her 10th birthday and arranged lessons with a professional ventriloquist. As Darci's confidence began to grow, she started to perform ventriloquism shows around her hometown and, when she learned about the America's Got Talent tryout in Austin, Texas earlier this year, she begged her parents to take her. Her performance in the audition was so impressive that judge Mel B gave her the Golden Buzzer, allowing her to jump straight to the live shows. Darci practiced all summer, and gave several show-stopping performances, even getting a chance to perform with her idol Terry Fator, the only other ventriloquist ever to win America’s Got Talent.
In the end, two Mighty Girls made it to the competition’s final two -- Darci and 10-year-old singing prodigy Angelica Hale. After 52 million votes were cast, Darci was named the champion, becoming the third female act to win the show in 12 seasons and winning $1 million and a headlining gig at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. While still overwhelmed by her big win, the talented tween says that her plans for her winnings include a new puppy and a dishwasher, explaining that "I have to get my mom a dishwasher because it doesn't work and we need a new one." As for the experience overall, Darci can't praise it highly enough: “I was very, very shy, but America’s Got Talent has given me a voice and more confidence than I could ever have.”
